Why recycle your old Apple devices?

Malaysia generates over 365,000 tonnes of e-waste annually, yet only 21.1% gets formally recovered — slightly better than the global average of 17.4%, but most still ends up in landfills, rivers, or the informal sector.[1][2]

Old electronics contain lithium, mercury, lead, and PCBs that contaminate soil and groundwater. Improper disposal violates the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005, where e-waste is classified under code SW110.[2]

On the recovery side: from just one tonne of iPhones disassembled by Apple’s recycling robots, recyclers can recover the same gold and copper that would otherwise come from 2,000 tonnes of mined rock.[3]

Did you know

Malaysia has generated 2.62 million tonnes of e-waste since 2005 — enough to fill three-quarters of the Petronas Twin Towers.

How our e-waste recycling process works

Four steps. No hidden fees. Full DOE compliance.

1

Drop off

Walk into our KL, PJ, or Seremban branch during business hours.

2

Wipe your data first

Sign out of iCloud and erase the device before drop-off. Our techs can guide you.

3

Component recovery

Salvageable parts feed our refurbishment line — extending their useful life.

4

DOE disposal

Remaining materials go to processors licensed under Regulations 2005.

Two options. One is free.

What happens to your old Apple device depends entirely on where you drop it.

DON'T

Toss it in the bin

  • Toxic chemicals leach into soil and groundwater
  • Violates Environmental Quality Act 1974 (SW110)
  • Zero material recovery
  • Contributes to Malaysia's 79% disposal gap

DO

Recycling FAQs

Common questions about our e-waste programme. Don’t see yours below?

Is there a fee to recycle my Apple device? +

No. Recycling is completely free at all KissMyMac branches, regardless of device condition or model age.

Should I wipe my device before bringing it in? +

Yes — please. Sign out of iCloud, turn off Find My, then go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. If you're not sure how, just ask at the counter and our techs will walk you through it. We don't perform the wipe for you so your credentials stay private.

Will I get paid for recycling my old device? +

No. Recycling is a free disposal service — we don't issue cash, credit, or vouchers for items dropped off for recycling. If your MacBook is M1 or newer and in working condition, you may qualify for our separate trade-in programme — see the next question.

What's the difference between recycling and trade-in? +

Recycling is free, accepts any Apple device in any condition, but offers no payout. Trade-in is limited to working MacBooks with M1 chip or newer — message us on WhatsApp with your model and condition for a valuation.

Do you accept non-Apple devices? +

Our recycling programme focuses on Apple products. For other brands, the Department of Environment's official locator at ewaste.doe.gov.my lists registered collection points, and most AEON Mall locations now accept household e-waste.

Can I ship my device instead of dropping it off? +

Yes — message us on WhatsApp first to confirm before sending. Sender covers postage. We recommend tracked shipping for devices that may have trade-in value.
