How do I know my MacBook battery needs replacing?
Check the battery status
Apple menu › System Settings › Battery, then the ⓘ next to Battery Health. “Service Recommended” means it’s time.
Check the cycle count
Hold Option, click the Apple menu › System Information › Power. Apple rates most MacBook batteries for 1,000 cycles.
Check the maximum capacity
Under 80% of the original capacity, you’ll feel it in daily use. Full Charge Capacity in System Information shows the real number.
Look for swelling
Put the MacBook on a flat table without a case. If it rocks, the bottom bulges or the trackpad is stiff, the battery has swollen.
How long a battery lasts
A new MacBook battery lasts 2 to 4 years with normal use. Heat and staying at 100% all day wear it faster.

How to make your MacBook battery last longer
Keep it cool
Lithium batteries like 16°C to 22°C. Keep the MacBook below 32°C and out of a hot car or direct sun.
Don’t leave it at 100% for weeks
Leave Optimised Battery Charging on, and let it run on battery now and then instead of sitting on the charger all day, every day.
Take the case off when charging
A hard shell traps heat while charging, and heat is what wears a battery fastest.
Storing it? Leave it at 50%
If the MacBook will sit unused for weeks, charge it to about 50% first. Not full, and never flat.
Lower the load
Turn the brightness down to a comfortable level and quit apps you’re not using. Less heat, fewer cycles.
Never let it sit dead
A battery left flat for a long time can fall into deep discharge and stop charging altogether.

My MacBook battery is swollen. Is it dangerous? Can it explode?
Yes, it’s dangerous, so stop charging it. A swollen lithium battery rarely explodes, but it can crack the trackpad, bend the case and catch fire if it’s punctured or kept on the charger. Bring it in and we replace it safely.
Why is my MacBook battery draining fast?
Usually a worn battery: check Battery Health and the cycle count. Apps running in the background, high brightness and heat drain it faster too. If it drains overnight in sleep, check System Settings › Battery for apps keeping it awake. If Battery Health shows Service Recommended, a new battery fixes it.
My MacBook battery won’t hold a charge. Does it need replacing?
If it drops quickly from 100%, dies away from the charger or shuts down with charge left, and the cycle count is high or Battery Health says Service Recommended, yes. We test it for free.
Is MacBook battery replacement worth it?

Why does my MacBook shut down at 30%?
A worn battery can’t deliver enough power when the chip asks for it, so the MacBook switches off with charge still showing. A new battery fixes it.
