Why a third-party shop can’t simply swap your Touch ID
It’s paired to your board
The Touch ID sensor is matched to the Secure Enclave on your MacBook’s logicboard. A sensor taken from another MacBook won’t work.
It needs Apple’s system
A new Genuine Apple sensor has to be ordered from Apple and paired with Apple’s configuration system. That’s what an Independent Repair Provider can do.
No top case replacement needed
On MacBooks Touch ID is a standalone module. We replace the sensor only, not the whole top case.
Drops tear the cable
The sensor sits on a very thin cable. A drop puts a lot of force on it.
Liquid is common
The top right corner is where drinks land. Liquid shorts the sensor and can reach the board.
You can still use your MacBook
With a broken Touch ID you type your password instead, but Apple Pay and fingerprint approvals won’t work.

Only the 512GB MacBook Neo has Touch ID. We replace it from RM650 with a Genuine Apple sensor paired using Apple’s system. The 256GB model has a power button without Touch ID.

Why can’t any shop replace MacBook Touch ID?
Touch ID is serialised and paired to your logicboard’s security chip. It only works with a Genuine Apple sensor configured through Apple’s system, which an Apple Certified Independent Repair Provider like KissMyMac can do.
Does Touch ID replacement need a new top case?
No. On MacBooks Touch ID is a standalone module. We replace the sensor only.
Will I lose my fingerprints?
Yes, for security they’re cleared. Add them again in System Settings › Touch ID & Password › Add Fingerprint.
My MacBook says “Failed to enroll” for Touch ID. What’s wrong?
The sensor no longer matches the security chip on your board. Try deleting your fingerprints and restarting. If it still fails, the sensor needs replacing.
My MacBook Touch ID is not unlocking. Is the sensor broken?
Not always. Clean and dry your finger and the sensor, then delete and re-add the fingerprint. If Touch ID still won’t unlock the MacBook or read any finger, the fingerprint sensor has failed and needs replacing.
My MacBook power button is stuck. Can you fix it?
Yes. On MacBooks with Touch ID the power button is the Touch ID sensor, so a stuck or unresponsive button is fixed by replacing the sensor and pairing it with Apple’s system.
Can water-damaged Touch ID be repaired?
Sometimes. Light liquid damage can be cleaned from the cable and the board side. If the sensor itself is damaged, it’s replaced.
