Why is there no sound from my iMac?
Check System Settings, then Sound, then Output, and pick the internal speakers. Unplug headphones and USB audio. If it’s still silent, the speaker, its cable or the audio circuit has failed.
Why are my iMac speakers crackling?
Crackling at normal volume means the speaker cone or coil is damaged. It won’t fix itself, and the speaker needs replacing.
Why does sound only come from one side?
iMacs have a left and a right speaker. If one side is silent, that speaker or its cable has failed.
Where are the speakers in an iMac?
At the bottom of the iMac. The sound comes out through grilles on the underside, which is why dust there can make it sound soft.
Can I replace iMac speakers myself?
We don’t recommend it. From 2012 the glass is glued to the body, so the screen has to be cut free and refitted, and DIY attempts often crack it.
Is it worth replacing iMac speakers?
Yes, if you use the built-in sound. If you mostly use headphones or external speakers, you can live without it. We tell you the price first.

No. A speaker replacement doesn’t touch your storage.
