Why is my Mac Studio fan so loud?
Dust comes in through the base
The Mac Studio pulls cool air in through the ring of holes around its base, close to the desk. That air brings dust, lint and pet hair in with it.
The fans work harder
When dust packs the fans and the heatsink, less air gets through. The fans spin faster to make up for it, and that’s the noise you hear.
Thermal paste dries out
Thermal paste, also called thermal gel or thermal compound, fills the tiny gap between the chip and the heatsink. Over a few years it dries and cracks, and heat stops moving across.
The chip slows itself down
When it gets too hot, the chip cuts its own speed to stay safe. That’s thermal throttling, and it’s why an old Mac Studio feels slower on long renders.
Not a DIY job
The fans and heatsink sit deep inside, and the Mac Studio opens from the base. You can brush the outside vents, but leave the inside to us.
