What’s it doing?
iMac Hard Drive Replacement & SSD Upgrade: the short answer
From RM650
SSD upgrades on every Intel iMac from 2009 to 2020 start at RM650. Soldered SSD upgrades on the 24-inch M1 to M4 start at RM1,600.
Slow iMac? Usually the drive
Most Intel iMacs still run a spinning hard drive. An SSD is the biggest speed boost it can get.
Folder with a question mark
The iMac can’t find its drive. Usually the hard drive has failed.
Clicking noise: back up now
The drive is dying. Copy your files and switch it off.
24-inch M1 to M4: yes, upgradable
Storage is soldered, so we upgrade it by soldering in larger chips. The RAM can’t be upgraded.
Up to 3-year warranty, No Fix No Pay
Every SSD carries up to a 3-year warranty. You only pay if we fix it.
Can you upgrade the SSD on a 24-inch M1, M3 or M4 iMac?
Yes, by soldering
Apple solders the storage chips straight onto the logicboard, so there’s no slot for a bigger drive. We remove the original chips and solder in larger ones under a microscope, from RM1,600.
The M chip stays the same
The part that manages storage is built into the M chip. Only the chips that hold your data change, so the iMac works exactly as before.
macOS installed fresh
New chips start empty. We set them up with Apple’s own restore tools and install macOS.
Back up first
Everything on the old chips is erased. Back up to Time Machine or iCloud before you bring it in, or ask us to help.
RAM is different
Memory is built into the M chip itself, so it stays the size you bought. Our RAM page explains why.

Questions people ask
How much does iMac hard drive replacement or SSD upgrade cost in Malaysia?
At KissMyMac an SSD upgrade on any Intel iMac from 2009 to 2020 starts from RM650. A soldered SSD upgrade on the 24-inch M1, M3 and M4 starts from RM1,600. The final price depends on the SSD size.
How long does an iMac SSD upgrade take?
Usually the same day on Intel iMacs. Soldered upgrades on the 24-inch M1 to M4 take longer, and we give you a time with the quote.
Is an SSD upgrade worth it on an old iMac?
Yes. It’s the biggest speed boost an older iMac can get. Most start in seconds and open apps several times faster.
Which iMacs can get an SSD?
Every Intel iMac from 2009 to 2020, and the 24-inch M1, M3 and M4 iMac by soldering in larger storage chips.
Can you upgrade the SSD on a 24-inch M1, M3 or M4 iMac?
Yes, from RM1,600. The storage chips are soldered to the logicboard, so we remove them and solder in larger ones, then install macOS fresh. The new chips start empty, so back up first.
Can you upgrade the RAM on a 24-inch M1, M3 or M4 iMac?
No. The memory is built into the M chip itself, so it stays the size you bought. Storage can be upgraded, RAM can’t.
What does the folder with a question mark mean?
The iMac can’t find a drive to start from. Usually the hard drive has failed, sometimes it’s the cable or macOS.
My iMac hard drive is clicking. What should I do?
Back up what you can straight away and switch it off. Clicking means the drive is failing, and every restart risks your files.
What is a Fusion Drive?
A small SSD paired with a slow hard drive. As the hard drive part ages, the whole thing slows down. Replacing it with a single SSD fixes that.
Will I lose my data?
On Intel iMacs we can copy your files to the new SSD. On the 24-inch M1 to M4 the new chips start empty, so back up before you bring it in.
Do you give a warranty on iMac SSD upgrades?
Yes, up to 3 years on the SSD.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk in to any branch. iMacs are big, so call ahead and we’ll be ready at the door.
