Every Mac Studio goes up to 8TB. The M3 Ultra and M5 Ultra go up to 16TB.
The modules are paired to the chip
The storage controller sits inside the M-series chip and the modules are just flash. New modules are fitted and the Mac Studio is restored with Apple Configurator to pair them.
Back up first
The new storage starts empty and macOS is installed fresh. Back up with Time Machine before you bring it in.

Can the SSD in a Mac Studio be upgraded?
Yes, it sits on modules
Every Mac Studio has two storage slots inside the base. Apple fits one or two modules depending on the capacity you bought.
It’s not a normal SSD
The modules are bare flash with no controller of their own. A standard NVMe SSD won’t work in a Mac Studio.
Matched modules
When both slots are used, the two modules must match. We fit them as a matched set so the Mac Studio sees one fast drive.
Paired with Apple’s tools
After fitting, the Mac Studio is restored in DFU mode with Apple Configurator. That pairs the new storage with the chip.
macOS is installed fresh
Everything on the old storage is erased. After the upgrade you restore your files from Time Machine or iCloud.
RAM stays the same
The memory is built into the M-series chip and can’t be added. Storage is the upgrade that is still possible.

It can’t find its startup disk. It’s usually a failed storage module or damaged firmware. We check for free and tell you which before we start.
Can you replace a failed Mac Studio SSD?
Yes. We replace the failed module, restore macOS and test the storage before you collect. If the fault is on the logicboard instead, we quote that first.
Can you upgrade the RAM at the same time?
No. The memory is built into the M-series chip and can’t be upgraded. Storage is the upgrade that is still possible.
Is upgrading the internal storage better than an external drive?
For projects you work on every day, yes. Internal storage is faster and there’s nothing to unplug. External drives are still fine for archives and backups.
Do I need my Apple ID after the upgrade?
Yes. After the restore you sign in with your Apple ID, and if Find My is on, you need it to unlock the Mac Studio.
